A day with Martin Bower
When I was a kid there were very few things that would drag me into the house when there was so much exploring and playing to do outside. My dad was an Arizona Highway Patrolman and we lived in little HP homes and trailers all across the state. A little place called Black Canyon City was my favorite of all the towns we lived in. This was my home from age 5 to 8 and an awful lot of incredible things happened there, and mostly my love for space and sci-fi. The first moon landing by Apollo 11 took place while there and I didn’t leave the TV for two weeks!!!! when we weren’t landing on the moon we would race home after school to watch a local show called Wallace and Ladmo, then Star Trek, and one of my big favorites “Stingray” I was so enthralled with the models in that show that i tried to make a stingray sub out of a block of wood and some old soda bottles,,,,, well with how it turned out I would have never gotten a job anywhere as a modeler.!!! A few years went by and a new show called Space 1999 was on. It aired every Saturday at 6:00 in the afternoon,,, the worst time to stop what you were doing outside to come in for an hour but I would without fail for the life of the show!!! Again the model and VFX stuff was my focus of the show,, A few years later,,, Alien hit the screen and finally there were names in the credits to who built these incredible models,,, Martin Bower was the one I saw and as time went on more of the subject matter got printed into books and Mags. Before “Star Wars” came out the only Sci Fi source available to me was Starlog magazine, and after “SW” the sci-fi info floodgates were open!!! I found out more about through these mags and especially the books on Alien. I found out that Martin was responsible for all the models I was a fan of from those early years of kid-dom!!!! It was incredible to discovery the awesome career this man has had and it is clear by what you see on the screen that every model is a masterpiece of incredible skill and talent. His work covers so many genres and styles, from TV and puppet shows to the hard core heavy movie miniatures!! Simply incredible, how fun to get paid to do what you so love to do. As we all know by the mid 90’s CG was killing off the practical model shops and this incredible art form was passing on into obscurity. Models are still used to this day in films but not as regularly as it once was. Many of the miniature giants have gone on to open shops to create models for collectors. Martin Bower has carried his passion and incredible talents to doing just this. Some of my favorite creations that Mr. Bower has created are the stingray, the modified Brian Johnson Eagles, the Hawk, and all the alien craft from Space 1999, the good ship Ajax from Flash Gordon,,,( What Flash Gordon Alivvveeee-ah, Dispatch the good ship Alex to bring back his Boowdeee!!! ), the Nostromo from Alien, the shuttle from Outland, and his awesome models from his take on War of the Worlds. I owe a lot to Martin and to Greg Jein. If it wasn’t for these guys I probably would still be a produce clerk in a grocery store in Arizona, HAAA!!! Thanks guys and to everyone visiting the blog today there are a lot of photo’s and a link to Martins page, If you get the bug to see more head on over to his page and get ready to spend a good part of the day!!! Like the on going Cobb and Goldsmith posts I’ll keep putting up Martins work as I find it. Tomorrow is the day of Kitbasher girl, get ready to meet a very cool young modeler!!

this thing is so huge!!! I had no idea how much so until you see these pics.
incredible,, wish they would have kept this color,, Love it!
awesome!
it's not a miniature it's practically full size, HAAA!
What an awesome image Thanks Ron Cobb, Martin Bower and the model crew and to Simon Deering for this one
this is brilliant,
Martins work on display at Wonderfest two weeks ago
well it's called a miniature, but it's a huge one!!!
so cool!!!
the sona attack fighter
This was a very fun little ship from ST Insurrection, It’s shape is lightly based on it’s DS9 predecessor the Jem Hedar battle cruiser. This was a quick and dirty little design that wound up being my fav from the movie,, It had sleek look in the flying sequences designed by the boys over at Santa Barbara studios and the folks at Blue Sky made a great model to use as CG reference. I’ll post those model images next week!

Mysteries of Megaliths, Human Cells and Static Electricity
While reading the latest issue of Nexus this morning, my eyes fell on a letter from Miroslav Provod, which I would like to share with you. It is on the subject of static electricity which seems to be in some way concentrated and channeled into a global grid by megalithic stone structures erected in various places on this planet by ancient cultures we know little or nothing about. Miroslav has been researching this mystery for years, and I have reported on his studies before. See for instance
Is 'Cosmic Energy' Static Electricity?
Static electricity versus ether
Now here is Miroslav's letter to Nexus Magazine and two further, recent articles about this particular line of research of his.
Golan Heights Megaliths
The Golan Heights (wikipedia) spreads over 1250 square kilometers and is an important spring region that supplies four states with water. The great presence of static electricity can be deduced from the high number of megalithic structures.
A local circular structure of 159 meters in diameter is composed of five concentric circles that are laid out by freely laying stones that all weigh 37,000 tons in total. The heaviest single stones that were used weigh about 20 tons. Around this structure there are a further 8,500 dolmens and menhirs, the heaviest weighing 50 tons, and they are up to 7 meters in height.
The Golan Heights may be thought of as a natural laboratory which can provide us with historical information, in view of this research.
The static electricity that is almost unknown to present science was crucial for all megalithic structures that were built around the Earth. The new knowledge about properties of static electricity that I describe at www.miroslavprovod.com provides more in-depth information via continuing research about the mysteries of construction of megalithic structures with combinations of different kinds of rocks; for example, at Stonehenge, Machu Picchu and many other sites. The megalithic structures had all the same function. They accumulated static electricity in their matter, which they gained from various sources. At the Golan Heights the sources are mainly underground springs, which provide the megaliths with the static electricity charge.
The electronics of the human body take the static electricity from cellular membranes in order to maintain functionality of all organs. The static electricity is continually supplied by the mitochondria.
It can be proved by various experiments that the charge of the human body can be filled by other means as well - by staying close to a greater source of static electricity, which spontaneously gives the energy to cellular membranes. The transfer of energy is rather slow.
In the case of transfer between a rock and a human body, it takes tens of minutes. This shows that the megalithic structures and, later, also the sacred structures were built mainly for health purposes.

Penumbra #567 DS9,
AHHHHH these were the bright days of working on ST DS9. 1990 to 1997 were the dark years for me,,, To sum it up quickly,,,a bad marriage,,, as is for all of us geeks, and fan boy/girls, we uber-geek out to much and don’t date enough. Naivety was the case here, and it made for a long, blurry, dark 7 years,,, OK now that the table is set we get to DS9 and the episode called Penumbra, well lets go back a few more months to “ST Insurrection” During the end of this one I took my daughters to Sunday school at our little local leona Valley Church, and I fell madly for their Sunday School teacher,,, It took a long time to get her to go out with me but she finally said yes and we went to the screening of Insurrection for our first date. Time flew by and I learned to smile again and we were engaged shortly after. DS9 was coming to the end of it’s 7th season and the assignment came to my desk to draw a new ship for an alien race called the Breen. I started to throw some sketches together and quickly came up with the idea that I would base this ships architecture around the letter “T”,,, “T” as in Tara,,, HAAAA!!!!!! So the designs started coming out in various stylized fashions, first in a symmetrical layout and then into an asymmetrical style that really thru the whole more into an Alien feel. The fighter version embarked on a “Y” style design and in the drawings you’ll see that it flies in two directions,,,, Yes it was another maddening scenario with that one supervisor that always tried to make things fly the opposite direction!!! UHG!!! I was burning out with these constant directional discussions. HAAAAAA!!! Anyways the ship went thru a considerable amount of changes until it hit the final multilayered aysemetrical design that was my fav of the whole bunch,,, Usually the one chosen is the drawing you like the least but this time it was the opposite. from there the Mighty Drex took over and started to model the ship,, This was the first venture on the show that we got to work on as a team,,, It was exciting!!! Doug really made a gnarly model and loved the color he chose to put it into!!! Oh those were some awesome times. In final the ship from it’s top view is of a very stylized “T” and it was a great time to make that one for my young bride to be!!! So with that there is a lot to see so enjoy and I have to get to work!!!
