Featured Artist: Dark Digital Artworks of Alexander Fedosov
Featured Artist: Dark Digital Artworks of Alexander Fedosov:
Hello creatives! The month is about to end so its time to get to know another featured creative. Last month we we’re stunned by the amazing illustrations of David Habben and knowing his artistic career and creative process is a nice source of inspiration for us.
And today, we go a bit more digital and dark as we give you an amazing artist from Ukraine – Alexander Fedosov.
At an early age of 26, Alexander can be considered as one of the most unique digital artist out there creating surreal portraits of fantasy characters. By just using Photoshop, he brings his subjects to life with a combination of highly imaginative concept and surreal elements. His works are mostly dark themed with intricate details creating a slightly 3D effect.
An ordinary PC with two monitors and a Wacom tablet are his ultimate tools of the trade. He gets his inspiration from various fantasy and surreal artists and listening to trash metal and hardcore rock music. His portfolio is full of portraits mostly woman and monster like creatures – each is just full of details and surreal elements no one has ever imagined. Lets be inspired by taking a closer look at some of them.

Space Shuttle concept art
Space Shuttle concept art:
Concept art has a multitude of uses outside of the film and gaming industries, even out in the “real world” — theme parks for example, use concept art to plan attractions.
Another use is in the development of proposed space vehicles, this has been the case since Chesley Bonestell created images of potential spacecraft for an American space program that did not yet exist, working from sketches on graph paper by pioneering rocket scientist Wernher von Braun. (The concept paintings were initially used to convince Congress to fund the space program by showing them the possibilities.)
An article today by Robert Gonzalez on the excellent science fiction/science themed blog, io9, digs into the archives of the San Diego Air & Space Museum and comes up with a treasure trove of concept art from the proposal days of the U.S. Space Shuttle program in a Flickr set of Space Related Images from the museum.
The concept art, which shows many preliminary and alternate designs, is mixed in with photographs of actual launches, tests and related subjects, but there is enough art to make flipping through the thumbnails well worthwhile. The io9 article also showcases some highlights with links to large versions. These images are in the public domain.
You’ve probably seen images recently of the last Space Shuttle’s last flight atop a carrier plane as it was moved to its resting place in a museum. The image above, top, was a concept for how the spacecraft might be carried atop existing aircraft for transport that was created before the Shuttles existed. Concept to reality.

Ralph Heimans
Ralph Heimans:
Originally from Austalia and now based in Paris, portrait artist Ralph Heimans has received much attention for his striking portraits of musician and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy (image above, top three) and Princess Mary of Denmark (fourth and fifth down), among others. He has recently accepted a commission to paint an official portrait of the Queen of England.
Heimans uses a traditional glazing technique more common in the 17th and 18th centuries than in contemporary painting, and his approach shows his admiration for masters of chiaroscuro like Caravaggiao and Velazquez. For some reason, though, my first thought was of Jacques Louis David (though much warmer), perhaps because of the importance that the settings play in his portraits.
It’s interesting to note that most of Heimans’ portrait compositions are horizontal — “landscape” rather than “portrait” orientation. The settings say something about the sitter, putting them in a context, and also create a great deal of the visual interest in the works when viewed as paintings, rather than as portraits of specific individuals.
He experiments with his compositions in other ways, taking chances on unusual angles and points of view, working with cast shadows, and creating wonderfully engaging images within his images in the form of reflections.
In addition to the (unfortunately limited) selection of work on his site, there are a few short videos that delve into the creation of two of his signature pieces.

Return to Ravnica
Return to Ravnica:
I was very fortunate to get to do a bunch of art for Magic: The Gathering’s new expansion, Return to Ravnica. It was a really fun set and I was given some excellent assignments.
