I know I know - animators don't have to know about this stuff, but... I sit next to lighters and interact with CG Sups enough that I figured I might need to know what exactly this HDR stuff is. I found Professor Kirt Witte who teaches VFX at SCAD's HDR FAQ which is very helpful.
